Interest in outward appearance is at a high point. Many people improve their looks by getting cosmetic surgery or taking makeup classes. It’s a basic desire to look attractive to other people. I am also interested in my looks to some extent. I think I look better than average, and that I have some personal flair. I’ve rarely felt self-conscious because of my looks. I have a small face and doe eyes, so with a good makeup job, I can look quite pretty. I am also taller than average, so most off-the-rack clothes fit well. My feet are an average size, so I can find my size easily. When you start to get greedy about your looks, there is no end to it. Many people I know have gotten plastic surgery, so I’ve given it some thought, too. However, I decided that developing my abilities would be a better use of my time.

요즘 외모에대한 관심이 그 어느 때보다 높다. 성형 수술을 받거나 메이크업 강의를 들어서 더 멋진 외모를 연출하는 사람들이 많다. 남들에게 예쁘게 보이고 싶은 것은 누구나 가지고 있는 기본적인 욕망이다. 나도 외모에 관심이 없지는 않다. 외모가 평균 이상이고, 개성도 있다고 생각한다. 어디 가서 외모에 대한 콤플렉스를 느껴 본 적은 거의 없다. 얼굴이 작은 편이고 눈이 큰 편이어서 메이크업을 잘하면 예쁜 얼굴을 연출할 수 있다. 키도 평균 이상이어서 웬만한 기성복은 다 맞는다. 발 크기도 적당한 편이어서, 사고 싶은 신발의 사이즈를 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 사실 외모에 대한 욕심을 내기 시작하면 끝도 없다. 주변에서 성형 수술을 받는 사람들이 많아서, 나도 받아 볼까 고민해 본 적이 있다. 하지만 그 시간에 내 능력에 대한 개발을 더 하면 좋겠다고 결론을 내렸다.

본문에서와 같이 문맥이 확실하면 makeup을 '화장’으로 이해하는 데 무리가 없지만, 일반적으로 makeup class라고 하면 '보충 수업’을 뜻한다. makeup은 '화장’뿐만 아니라 ‘보충이나 대체하는 것’ 혹은 '화해’를 뜻할 수 있으니 혼동하지 않도록 유의해야 한다.
