Have you ever seen a group of men dressed in military uniforms patrolling the streets of Seoul at night? They sure don’t look like active duty soldiers. They are actually in the reserve forces. Soldiers who finished their military service in the Korean Armed Forces are automatically transferred to the Reserve Forces. Korea’s Reserve Forces have two major branches. The reservists must serve their first four years in the Mobilization Reserve Forces and then their next four years in the Homeland Reserve Forces. After that, they serve in the Civil Defense Forces until the age of 40. There are about 3.2 million reservists in Korea.
