When I was in 12th grade, I wasn’t accepted into the college I wanted. After thinking about it. I decided to take another year. I went to an academy for people reapplying to college, and I prepared for another year. It was hard on me to study for longer. I was also jealous of my friends who went on to college. In the end. I was also able to get into the college I wanted. However, some of my friends fell short again and had to take a third year.

나는 고등학교 3학년 때, 원하는 대학에 합격하지 못했다. 고민 끝에, 재수를 하기로 결정했다. 재수 전문 학원을 다니며, 대학 준비를 1년간 더 했다. 공부를 더 오랜 기간 한다는 것이 심적으로 힘들었다. 대학을 다니는 친구들이 부럽기도 했다. 나도 끝내 원하는 대학에 들어갈 수는 있었다. 하지만 또 실패해서 삼수를 하는 친구들도 있었다.

한국 학생들이 재수나 삼수를 하는 것에 대해 설명해 보세요.

There is a widespread belief in Korea that you have to attend a prestigious college to lead a successful life. Many Korean students receive higher education. However, many other students opt to try again or even a third time if they don’t get into the school of their choice. It’s a phenomenon unique to Korea. The students prepare again for college admissions indifferent ways. Some pay through the nose for dedicated academies. Others study alone in libraries all year. The students all have a tough time mentally.

우리나라에는 일류 대학을 다녀야 성공한 인생을 살 수 있다는 인식이 사회 전반에 팽배해 있다. 그래서 상당수의 한국 학생들은 대학에 진학한다. 그러나 원하는 학교에 합격하지 못하면, 재수 혹은 삼수를 택하는 학생들이 제법 많다. 한국에서만 볼 수 있는 독특한 현상이다. 비싼 학원비를 내고 재수 전문 학원에서 공부하거나, 1년 내내 독서실에서 홀로 독학을 하는 학생들까지 다양한 방법으로 대학 입시릍 다시 준비한다. 학생들은 모두 심적으로 힘든 시기를 보내게 된다.
