When children turn 7 years old in Korea, they enter elementary school. Primary education is compulsory for everyone. The first semester begins in March, and there are two semesters in each year. After completing 6 grades, students receive a diploma and graduate from elementary school. There are 3 grades in middle school, which everyone is obliged to attend as well. High school is a matter of personal choice. However, the vast majority of people attend high school and graduate after their senior year. In addition to ordinary high schools, there are also special purpose high schools for foreign languages, science, and the arts, as well as vocational schools. Students have to submit applications individually and be accepted to attend some schools. Students who don’t attend high school can take a GED test to receive the equivalent of a diploma.

한국에서는 만 7살이 되면, 초등학교에 입학을 한다. 초등 교육은 누구나 받아야 하는 의무 교육이다. 3월에 첫 학기가 시작되고, 1년이 2개의 학기로 구성되어 있다. 총 6개 학년을 마치면 졸업장을 받고 초등학교를 졸업한다. 중학교는 총 3개 학년으로, 중학교도 의무적으로 다녀야 한다. 고등학교는 본인의 선택에 의해서 진학할 수 있지만, 국민 절대 다수가 고등학교에 진학하고, 3학년을 마치면 졸업한다. 일반계 고등학교 외에 외국어 고등학교, 과학 고등학교, 예술 고등학교 등의 특수 목적 고등학교 뿐만 아니라 실업 고등학교도 있다. 일부 학교들은 개별적으로 지원하고, 합격해야 다닐 수 있다. 고등학교를 다니지 않을 경우, 검정고시를 봐서 고등학교 졸업장과 같은 효력의 증서를 취득할 수도 있다.

고등학교 3학년
나라마다, 또는 지역마다 학교가 3년제, 4년제 등으로 상이하기 때문에, 이에 따라 사용되는 용어도 서로 다르다. 미국처럼 고등학교가 대체로 4년제인 경우에는 1,2,3,4학년을 각각 freshman, sophomore, junior, senior year라고 부른다.
예) I am in my third year of high school. (나는 고등학교 3학년에 재학 중입니다.)
My son is in his senior year of high school. (우리 아들은 고3이다.)
